BMW pursues a clear strategy: to implement hybrid technology to gain maximum efficiency. The new BMW 7 Series Sedan is already the most efficient vehicle in its class. The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid reduces fuel consumption and emissions by 15 percent versus the same car running on a combustion engine only. Yet a BMW with an electric motor is still a BMW so that the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid still offers superior safety, comfort and design. The vehicle's 20-inch light-alloy rims and Bluewater metallic paint finish serve as a particular sign of distinction for BMW's maximum efficiency concept cars.
At the core of every hybrid vehicle is the battery. It has to deal with full load peaks, irregular loading cycles and mechanical wear and tear without losing any of its capacity as well as offering high energy density. New, lithium-ion batteries are integrated in the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid, which far exceed the performance of conventional battery units. The batteries are connected to the electric motor and other components via the 120V, on-board network. This enables the ongoing use of the air conditioning system even when the Auto Start Stop function has switched off the petrol engine.
The BMW V8 petrol engine with High Precision Injection and Twin Turbo (1) is the most efficient engine in its class delivering unrivalled fuel consumption and emission levels. This superior engine is now combined with an electric motor fully integrated in the transmission housing, developing maximum output of 15 kW/20 hp and peak torque of 210 Nm (2). The high-performance electronic systems (3) are located out of sight in the 8-speed automatic transmission housing (4) and combine supremely smooth gear shifts with unmatched driving dynamics. The extremely high level of performance provided by the 120V-powerful lithium-ion battery (5) ensures unequalled driving pleasure on every journey.
